The Early Days of Mole Checker Apps
Back in the early 2010s, mobile healthcare was still in its infancy. Most skin health apps have focused on monitoring new growths, which is why they have been given the name “Mole Checker” apps at the time were very basic: they allowed people to take photos of their moles, save them, and show these images to a doctor later for review. No artificial intelligence was involved, and the apps worked more like digital photo albums than health assistants.
For us at Skinive, founded in September 2020, this limited vision was never enough. Skin health is about more than monitoring suspicious moles for cancer. Millions of people suffer from a wide range of dermatological conditions: acne, eczema, psoriasis, infections, and many more. We believed mobile technology could do more than just capture pictures — it could empower people everywhere to understand, track, and improve their skin health.
Why We Decided to Build a Skin Scanner App
Our mission from day one was simple yet ambitious: to make dermatological care accessible anytime, anywhere. We wanted to move beyond the simple “Mole Checker” model and create a true Skin Scanner app powered by advanced artificial intelligence.
Over the past five years, we invested heavily in scientific research, clinical studies of AI skin analysis accuracy, and the collection of high-quality medical data. With the help of our dedicated team — one third of whom are certified dermatologists and oncologists — we developed an AI system capable of analyzing a wide spectrum of skin pathologies across all skin tones, ages, and conditions.
This wasn’t just about technology. It was about building trust: trust that a mobile app could really provide reliable insights, trust that AI could support rather than replace doctors, and trust that early detection can change lives.
5 Years of Growth and Impact
In just five years, Skinive has grown into a global community of users who care about their skin health:
🧠 5 million skin analyses performed with our AI
🩺 750,000 cases of skin conditions identified, including 130,000 with potential oncology risks
⏱️ Every minute, a new user joins Skinive, and our system performs 5 AI-powered skin checks
These numbers are not just milestones; they represent people who found peace of mind, caught early warning signs, or simply learned to take better care of their skin.
How the Skinive App Works nowadays?
What makes the Skinive Skin Scanner app unique is our innovative two-component neural network:
On-device AI Skin Scanner — runs directly on the smartphone, providing real-time skin scanning. This helps users instantly detect potential risks during a live scan.
Cloud-based AI Skin analysis API — performs deep analysis of the captured image, generating personalized recommendations for next steps, whether it’s self-care, monitoring, or visiting a dermatologist.
Our AI has been trained on one of the largest datasets of dermatological conditions in the world. It is designed to detect both melanoma risks and a wide variety of non-cancerous skin diseases. Importantly, it is continuously tested and improved for accuracy, inclusivity, and reliability across all skin tones and populations.
Recognition and Awards Along the Journey
Innovation rarely goes unnoticed. Over the past years, Skinive has been honored with:
- 4YFN & MWC recognition for innovation in mobile technologies
- Product of the Day on Product Hunt
- TelecomPaper Innovation Awards
But the most valuable recognition comes from our users and the medical community, who rely on our app every day.
Looking Ahead: The Next Chapter
As we celebrate our 5-year anniversary, we are more committed than ever to our mission: helping people become healthier and more confident in their own skin.
The road ahead includes:
- Expanding the range of conditions our app can detect
- Further improving the precision and inclusivity of our AI algorithms
- Strengthening collaborations with dermatologists and healthcare providers worldwide
- Making preventive dermatology more accessible in underserved regions
Skinive: More Than an Mole Checker App
From a world where Mole Checker apps were simple photo logs, we’ve come to an era where a Skin Scanner app powered by AI can perform millions of analyses and empower people to take control of their skin health.
Skinive is not just a piece of technology. It’s a movement toward democratizing dermatology, making skin health care accessible, and reminding everyone that beauty and health go hand in hand.
Here’s to the next five years of innovation, impact, and healthier skin for all.
